Studio project – performance venues.
The brief for this project was to design a flexible performance venue to add to the collection of cultural institutions in the Arts Precinct of Melbourne. The precinct currently lacks a venue to suit modern performance genres and suffers from a decreasing number of patrons.
Mezzo House is situated on the Main Lawn between the Arts Center and Hamer Hall. It aims to address the issues of flexibility of performance types and opposes the existing architectural language of traditional performance buildings in the area. It questions the relationship between front-of-house and back-of-house, however it also retains the memorable experience and journey of a night of arts.
The design of Mezzo House incorporates existing elements of a performance space such as the red carpet and mirrors which are used throughout the building in unexpected ways to enhance the theatrical experience.
